Background of the Study
Network security compliance refers to the adherence to established cybersecurity policies, standards, and regulations to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of network resources. Universities store and transmit vast amounts of sensitive data, including student records, research data, and financial transactions. As cyber threats evolve, compliance with security frameworks such as the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) guidelines, ISO 27001, and GDPR has become crucial.
Federal University, Gusau, relies on an extensive network infrastructure that supports academic, research, and administrative activities. However, compliance with network security best practices is often challenged by a lack of awareness, inadequate security policies, and resource constraints. Non-compliance with security standards can lead to data breaches, legal consequences, and reputational damage.
This study investigates the current state of network security compliance at Federal University, Gusau, assessing adherence to established security policies, identifying gaps, and proposing strategies for improving compliance.
Despite the increasing cyber threats targeting academic institutions, Federal University, Gusau, faces challenges in maintaining network security compliance. Many staff and students lack awareness of cybersecurity policies, leading to risky behaviors such as weak passwords, unsecured Wi-Fi connections, and unauthorized software installations. Additionally, the university's security policies may not be effectively enforced or updated to address emerging threats.
Regulatory compliance frameworks provide guidelines for securing network infrastructure, but adherence to these policies remains inconsistent. There is a need to assess the university’s compliance level, identify barriers to implementation, and recommend strategies to enhance network security compliance.
